Meeting a Buyer Safely: A Simple Checklist

5 min read · Updated 2026-07-09

Selling to a stranger from a classified ad is routine and usually uneventful, but a little caution costs nothing and prevents the rare bad situation. The aim is not paranoia; it's a few sensible defaults that let you complete the sale with peace of mind.

Pick the right place

For small items, meet in a busy public spot in daylight, a café, a shopping centre, or one of the designated safe-exchange zones many police stations now offer. Public and visible deters trouble on its own. Save private addresses for large items that genuinely can't be moved.

Daylight, a public place, and someone knowing where you are handles ninety percent of the risk for free.

Payment traps to know

Most payment scams rely on making a fake transfer look real, or on "accidentally" overpaying and asking for change back. Wait for money to actually clear before releasing an item, and never refund an overpayment you can't confirm landed. When in doubt, cash in hand removes the whole category of problem. A related workplace-management perspective is available in here.

One rule that covers most of it: item and payment change hands at the same time, in a public place, in daylight. Keep to that and the rest is easy.
